Bio-hygienic seals inhibit micro-organisms
July 15th 2011

New bio-hygienic seals from ERIKS offer engineers a range of chemical and mechanical characteristics.

Based on an anti-microbial agent, the new seals inhibit the growth of micro-organisms and prevent them from contaminating or colonising its surface.

The seals are ideal for a wide range of applications, especially in the food, beverage and pharmaceutical sectors where CIP or SIP techniques are used, and in medical devices and water treatment systems.

The antimicrobial agent is impregnated evenly in the seal compound and is formed from a zirconium phosphate-based ceramic, ion-exchange resin containing silver. Its efficiency is maintained throughout the operating life of each seal, regardless of wear or abrasion.

The antimicrobial agent is safe for human contact and is effective against many different micro-organisms. Unlike most organic biocides, the new bio-hygienic compound can be used in human and food contact applications, with FDA compliant grades being available.

The new bio-hygienic seals also eliminate foul odours caused by bacterial build-up, plus discolouration and the formation of mildew and slime.

ERIKS can integrate the new compound into a wide range of seal types including standard and bespoke O-rings, extruded profiles, sheets and mouldings in HNBR-70, EPDM-70, Silicon-70.
